18| The Cliché Evil Twin

Adal was thrown several yards as the back-half of a Gearrtha’s claw collided with his chest. The force was so great that the air left his lungs and he could hear the cracking of his own ribs. The metallic taste of blood coated the inside of his mouth as he slammed into the platform, his body rolling over and over before colliding with a stack of crates that had been left by the Dweller’s before the battle began. A too tall stack of crates teetered and then came crashing down on Adal, burying him in a pile of wood.

In the distance, Adal could hear Arija shouting but the pain overtook his thoughts, and his eyesight was fading in and out. Adal’s lungs burned, and he struggled to take in oxygen. He pushed up on one crate and daylight spilled in just in time for him to see Arija connect a perfect spin kick and send one of the Gearrthas crashing into a wall. She ducked as another one flew at her and then fired off a barrage of shots. Each shot hit the Gearrtha square in the chest, and it fell to the ground next to her. Arija reared back her booted foot and kicked the dead creature in the head, almost taking it off with her force.

Adal watched as the blurry image of Arija took her aggression out on the Gearrtha that had hit him. He could see his pulse pounding at the edge of his vision until the world faded to black.

Arija looked around, trying to figure out where Adal had landed. Her heart pounded in her ears and rage warmed her face. If she’d gotten him killed, she’d never forgive herself.

“I was starting to wonder if you were ever going to expel your munitions.” The voice made Arija jump, and she spun around, gun pointed and at the ready.

In front of her stood a Dweller man, but something about him was different from the others she’d seen so far. He carried himself like he was in charge and the fighting that surrounded them didn’t seem to bother him in the slightest.

“What’s wrong with you? You need to get out of here! Those things will kill you!” Arija said, keeping her aim on the strange Dweller. He only smiled coldly and shook his head. He looked almost familiar even though Arija hadn’t met that many Dwellers. He was clothed head to toe in black leather pressed with straight edges. His hands sat perched on his copper belt, upon which hung two large daggers.

As Arija looked from the weapons back to his face, recognition washed over her. He looked almost exactly like Cog. The only difference between the two was a long, silver scar that ran down the left side of the Dweller’s face.

“There isn’t much of a reason for me to fear these amazing creatures. You, on the other hand, have no idea how lucky you are.” The Dweller said as he let his eyes roam over Arija.
